Johnson William Turnbull
Architect & Surveyor
(c.1745-1835)
Turnbull's training and early career is unclear but in 1795 he is listed as an architect and surveyor at Gloucester Place/Lane, Bristol and in 1801 as a land surveyor. In the early nineteenth century Turnbull is known to have undertaken several surveys of property/lands for a variety of Bristol churches and highway and footpath surveys in Henbury and Westbury-on-Trym.(1)
Turnbull entered into a partnership with Henry Rumley between c.1815-1819, possible with Rumley as the junior partner; they operated from 42, Back Street. Turnbull continued to work on his own account in the 1820s although there are no known works by his authorship. Aged 90, Turnbull died in 1835 and was remembered in death notices as a long-time architect and surveyor of Bristol.
