John Armstrong's Apprentices
William Newport:
William was engaged as an apprentice (for seven years) with Armstrong from October 1812. It is unclear whether this he completed his term and he is not recorded within the Bristol apprenticeship books. There is no further information on his career.
Henry Dykes (1806, Andover - 1875, Bristol):
Henry Dykes married John's eldest daughter Jane in 1833 and is recorded as an Inn Keeper. On the 1841 Census his occupation is listed as a surveyor and it is possible that he was working for his father-in-law. By the 1847 Dyke was working as a Superintendent for the Bristol and Birmingham Railway and from 1854 as a Traffic Superintendent for the Bristol and Exeter Railway Company; a position he held until shortly being his death.
