Charles Dyer
b.1793, Bristol d.1848
The existing biographies of Charles Dyer by Howard Colvin and Gomme, Jenner and Little are accurate reflections and there is little new to add to his career works.
Not previously recorded is that Dyer was in a short-lived architectural and surveying partnership with Simon Thurston (b.1791, London). There are no known works by the partnership.
Dyer stopped practicing as an architect in December 1847, selling up in Bristol and returned to London, but died at Doughton, near Tetbury Gloucestershire in January 1848, aged 50.
It is curious that Dyer died in Doughton, where on the outskirts is located the Gothic country house of Elmstree (Grade II. NHLE: 1089563) which is attributed to William Brookes.
His nephew Samuel Dyer is recorded as an architect living in Bristol on the 1851 Census, but died at Newtown Cardiff in 1858.
