1849-50 - Brodie, Roethe & Hudson-McAulay (Historic England, 2019) attribute the design of the extension to the Royal Hotel and the entire Royal Terrace to Gabriel and Hirst (Historic England 2019, p.38) but the alterations to the hotel were being undertaken in December 1849 (Weston-Super-Mare Gazette, 15th Dec 1849, p.1), the year in which Hirst is listed only as a clerk of work on Gabriel's St Judes Church. On completion of the works in June 1850, Gabriel is recorded as the architect (Weston-Super-Mare, 29th June 1850, p.3) whilst the first advertisement featuring Gabriel and Hirst in partnership is in from September 1850. It is unknown whether Hirst had been working in the office of Gabriel in 1850 before entering into partnership later in the same year. The Royal Hotel was known as Reeves Hotel, after the owner who had earlier owned a Reeves Hotel in Park Street, Bristol and this may account for the use of a Bristol-based architect.

1856 -  Gabriel advertised a large house in Redland/Durdham-Down. The identification of this house is still under investigation, although from initial work, he may have been just the agent for the sale. Several advertisements e.g. Bristol Mercury, Sat, 11th October 1856, p.4., column 5.
