Henry William Hicks
Architect
(1833-1887)
Hicks was the nephew (by marriage) of Henry Underwood and resided with him in Bath from c.1841, becoming his assistant in the 1850s. Henry describes himself as a surveyor on his marriage to Harriet Weaver in 1858, Bristol. However, in 1855 he is listed as an architect from No.10 Pierrepoint Street, Bath - the same offices as Henry Underwood.
Henry William Hicks was in partnership with Thomas William Issac Player as architects from 40 Gay Street in 1859. This partnership lasted until 1873.
Henry was one of several people trialed and acquitted of manslaughter requiring works to a bridge in Bath. However, after the acquittal he relocated to London and continued to work as an architect. He died in 1887 in East Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada; it is unclear whether he had emigrated or was traveling.
